Music to spark a better life for older adults and preschoolers

During my many years as a nursing home and retirement community activity professional, I loved resources with hands on materials, which spurred me to create even bigger programs. This is the first of several product reviews for those working with older adults.  I will also be highlighting materials for those with preschoolers.

“I Hear Music” by Becky Karras is available from Eldersong Publications is for $37.95 at http://www.eldersong.com/servlet/StoreFront.   This 3-part kit contains a CD, black & white photo cards and a 30-page activity guide on 20 topics.  Becky includes discussion questions, lists of related songs familiar to older populations, suggested props, and other activity ideas.  These ideas would lead me to other ideas on the topic.  I could then expand from a single event to up to a week worth of ideas.  These ideas would come from my past experiences as well as web searches on key words.  Often the materials were appropriate for intergenerational groups with some of the materials then providing an historic perspective.  The last several pages of the guide have some great filler “Supplemental Materials”.

Becky has created many user-friendly products for use with older adults.  In fact, the Eldersong website also offers an opportunity for a FREE monthly newsletter of ideas on a theme.  Be watching next week for another one of my Eldersong favorites.
